The basics of how to interact with other players of Final Fantasy XIV, including chat window commands and more.

Introduction

This page gives a basic overview of ways to interact with other players in Final Fantasy XIV. You might also want to read the official Communication Guide on The Lodestone.

The Chat Log Window

The chat log window for Final Fantasy XIV is in the bottom-left corner by default. (If the chat window is not there, you can press Enter on keyboard, or the Back button on gamepad, to make it reappear.) You can switch to different chat channels by clicking the speech bubble and selecting the desired channel. You can also use different chat channels without needing to manually switch to them by starting your message with a slash command, such as /say . See the Chat Commands table at the bottom of the page for more information.

Emotes

Emotes provide another way to interact with players. Emotes include facial expressions, gestures, dances, etc. More emotes can be unlocked with certain quests, and some can be purchased from the FFXIV Online Store. For a full list of the emotes that are currently available to you in

Chat Modes

There are several chat modes in the game that can be used to communicate with other players. The differences between chat modes are the types of messages that they each display.

Any message input in the speak chat mode can be seen by any and all players in the immediate vicinity. It is the default chat mode, and messages displayed in this manner will appear in ivory. This chat mode is activated by prefacing a message with either /say or /s. In addition, the active chat mode may be set to /say mode by typing the dictate /chatmode say, /chatmode s, or /s with no following communication, and then pressing the Enter key.

Any message input in the party chat mode can be seen by any and all party members. Messages displayed in this manner arrive in blue. This chat mode is activated by prefacing a message with either /party or /p. In addition, the active chat mode may be place to /party mode by typing the command /chatmode party, /chatmode p, or /p with no following message, and then pressing the Enter key.

Any word
Played every other MMO on the planet and veered away from this one because I wasn't a fan of 'cat girls'. Anyways, found the game on sale and went ahead and bought it. I was surprised to find that the stereotypical anime tropes aren't so pronounced in this game which is great. Started playing yesterday. I honestly love this MMO and wish I started sooner.

Fast forward to today (played the game non-stop); I'm level 34 and I haven't seen a single person speak in General chat.

Is there a general chat? Why is everyone so silent? I've visited every crowded town in the game and couldn't find a single person speaking in chat. Tried talking in chat myself and couldn't foster a reply.
