When diving into the earth of synthesizers, the first questions most synth heads often demand are about the number of oscillators, voices, LFOs, filters, and effects. But honestly, I’d quarrel that one of the most crucial characteristics in shaping sounds comes from the ADSR envelope.
What is ADSR?
ADSR stands for Strike, Decay, Sustain, and Release. Each of these parameters plays a vital role in how a sound evolves over time. If you don’t know what those are, here’s a quick rundown:
Attack controls how quickly the sound reaches its peak after a note is pressed, Decay determines how fast it drops to the sustain level, Sustain is the level the sound holds while the note is held, and Release dictates how prolonged it takes for the sound to fade out after the note is released.
So why is this important? ADSR can aid you make the exact sound you want instead of scrolling endlessly through presets.
Want a keen, staccato sound, like a pluck? ADSR’s got you! Set a very short attack and free time.
Looking for sounds that don’t have a definite beginning or end, like a pad sound? ADSR can do that too—just set very long attack and release times.

1. How to Find Serum’s Presets Folder
Serum is one of the most successful software synths out there, and it doesn’t show signs of being unseated from the virtual instrument throne. With its dual wavetables, flexible modulation, its rack of effects and other features – all within a straightforward interface – Xfer’s super synth is popular with producers the world over…
But with such a fanbase, even Serum’s 458 presets inside its Factory Library have probably been used in loads of tracks. Many producers opt to download and install new Serum Presets made by professional sound designers, to stock their sonic larder with more tasty supplies. There’s even a Free Pack available from Loopmasters. Here’s how to do it yourself.

The first good news: you don’t have to close your DAW. Simply navigate to Serum’s Menu in the top-right, and select Show Serum Presets Folder.
Your OS’s file browser will open up at the correct system folder containing Serum’s factory presets.

Should Vital be sold?
I get where you’re coming from. I just don’t think that regarding Vital as a free synth that should not pursue for monetary compensation for it’s developer’s work on an ideological anti-capitalist basis will reform the dominant western economy. I’d just like to see Vital getting better, even the slightest to optimize its workflow and usability of the features it currently has.
Additionally, I don’t see money as communicator of value and superior resource usage as destructive movie of capitalist economy. That’s a different question from what ethics the economy is based on, how it should be controlled, and where it is taking our world. But that’s a completely different issue.
I’m happy with whatever solution there could be to keep Vital developing even the slightest and provide its users and hopefully the developer a fair value, now and in the future.
If Vital would be completely free and uncover source I probably wouldn’t assess aloud here about how monetizing could encourage its development, even though most complex FOSS projects seem to lose to commercial products in stability and usability.
