BBarcelona, Spain – South Africa has once again showcased its force as a world class business events destination at the recently concluded IBTM World 2024 in Barcelona, Spain. The event, which ran from 19 to 21 November 2024, brought together thousands of industry leaders, exhibitors, and buyers from over 150 countries, offering a global platform to connect, collaborate, and explore the latest trends in the business events sector.

Led by Tourism Minister Patricia De Lille, South Africa's delegation highlighted the country's capabilities as a business events destination. Comprising 18 exhibitors and five Small, Micro, and Medium Enterprises (SMMEs) — Syavaya Corporate Tour, Get The Picture, Afri-Centric Luxury Experiences, Afrikan Native Travel, and Offshore Adventures — the delegation showcased the country’s world-class facilities, exceptional infrastructure, and unique offerings.

The IBTM in its 2024 edition, has put an end to the national and international fairs that HOSBEC BUSINESS has attended.

The world's leading event for the meetings, incentives, conferences and events industry, held annually in Barcelona, has one goal; to inspire the events world to deliver exceptional experiences to its clients.

At IBTM World, more than 3,000 exciting destinations and quality suppliers come together to network with more than 15,000 industry professionals from over 100 countries around the world.

The event was held at Feria Barcelona, where more than 4,700 approved buyers from 110 countries attended the show. This large and diverse participation of exhibitors provides even more opportunities to find new ideas and inspiration, as well as indicating the strength of the global business events sector. IBTM World 2024 closed its doors yesterday at Fira Barcelona with a more than positive balance: more than 73,000 business meetings scheduled, an increase of 19% over last year, and hundreds of chance business exchanges which are also a plus of the trade fair format. More figures: 10% more visitors, 18% more hosted buyers and more than 2,350 exhibitors.

In an edition that focused on the potential of people and the power of relationships, IBTM showed how, along with technological advances, what event professionals need to succeed are other people.

A future to grow together

Insight, innovation, trial design, social responsibility, marketing, careers and advocacy were the main themes of a conference programme designed to feed the industry’s appetite for collaboration.

Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, a five-time British Paralympic athlete, opened the first day’s main stage with an inspiring talk on the limitless possibilities that arise when empowering people, fostering team spirit and championing inclusion.

This year’s edition, the 37th in its history, promises to be the largest and most dynamic to date. More than 2,500 exhibitors from destinations, travel agencies, tour operators, congress and convention centers, hotel chains, service companies and international event organizers, characterizing more than 150 countries, are taking part. A new highlight this year is the addition of the Hotel Pavilion, an area for independent hotel businesses and small hotel groups to present their offerings in a setting that evokes the atmosphere and comforts of a luxury hotel.

Organizers anticipate the attendance of 12,000 MICE industry professionals, including more than 2,650 invited buyers. It is estimated that the 132,000 business meetings scheduled through the IBTM World appointment system will be exceeded.

Potential.’, IBTM Planet 2024 puts the spotlight on the power of human connections and their potential to travel innovation and sustainable growth in the events industry.
