Ddos world of warcraft
One of World of Warcraft Hardcore’s most watched guilds, OnlyFangs, has officially disbanded — not because of in-game failure, but due to repeated DDoS attacks. The group, made up of streamers and creators like Sodapoppin, Tyler1, and Zizaran, decided to dial it quits after players repeatedly lost characters and raid progress because of connection issues caused by targeted server overloads.
The ruling came after several attacks interrupted gameplay, including a failed Blackwing Lair run where random disconnects during boss fights left players vulnerable. In Hardcore mode, where character death is permanent, technical disruptions don’t just mean frustration — they mean hours or weeks of progress lost in an instant.
What actually happened
Starting first March, a wave of DDoS attacks hit Blizzard’s infrastructure. These types of attacks flood servers with traffic, causing lag, disconnections, or full downtime. In WoW Hardcore, the stakes are uniquely high: the game mode proposals no revives, no retries. When your character dies, it’s over.
The OnlyFangs guild wasn’t just any group, it was made of top creators streaming their journey to thousands of fans. That visibility likely
Back in March, I covered the news that World of Warcraft’s game servers have recently been under considerably more stress than usual thanks to a series of severe Distributed-Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks. In response to public outcry caused by this widespread server sabotage, Blizzard has elected to break its own self-imposed rules by restoring World of Warcraft Hardcore characters that died as a direct result of DDoS-related game server instability. However, it seems Blizzard may have unintentionally shot itself in the foot because of the timing of its response. Here are my thoughts on this whole situation.
When I say that the timing of the action on Blizzard’s part may have done more harm than good, what I mean is this: It was only after a prominent guild of popular Hardcore WoW livestreamers was negatively affected by these DDoS attacks that Blizzard announced it would help players who have been inconvenienced by said attacks. This could just be an unfortunate coincidence. Blizzard may have been planning to get action before the guild of livestreamers publicized their issues, but hadn’t yet been prepared to say anything publicly. From what I’ve seen recently, tho

An Update on Our Response to the DDoS Attacks
Kaivax (Kaivax) 1
We have begun resurrecting player-characters that were lost during recent distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on our Hardcore realms. Our preliminary focus has been on characters that died during attacks on March 22, 23, and 24, and we are expanding the scope of our review to consider resurrections of characters lost during confirmed DDoS incidents after those dates.
For dead characters that were transferred from Hardcore realms to Normal (PvE) realms, we have taken steps to return these characters to the Hardcore realms in the state they were in prior to being transferred, and we have flagged them to be playable as though they never died when you next log in.
- You must go to the character log-in screen on your Hardcore realm and log into the previously-deceased character to complete the process.
In the event of future character deaths due to DDoS attacks, we will only restore characters that remain on their Hardcore realm. Please note that in the future, should your character die due to a DDoS attack on a Hardcore realm, it cannot be restored if the character is subsequently transferred to
World of Warcraft Classic hardcore characters lost to DDoS attacks may get a rare revive
Blizzard announced on March 24 its intentions to revive hardcore World of Warcraft Classic characters lost in a recent distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, a malicious flooding of the game’s servers with petition data by outside entities that caused widespread lag and, in some cases, even disconnections.
“Unlike the many other ways characters can die in Hardcore, DDoS attacks are an intentionally malicious strive made by third-party bad actors, and we believe the severity and results of DDoS attacks specifically warrant a different response,” Clay Stone, associate production director for World of Warcraft Classic, said on the game’s official forums.
World of Warcraft Classic got hardcore realms in 2023 as a way of giving players an additional challenge in the form of permadeath. While it’s possible to transfer a deceased hardcore character to a normal realm and continue playing there, the draw for many hardcore players is seeing how far they can get in the expansive MMORPG under the unwavering threat of losing all their hard-earned progress.
